Until their discovery by the Spanish in the 16th Century, the Canary Islands were inhabited by the Guanches, a modern Cro-Magnon people as far as physical characteristics, who spoke the Berber tongue. When first discovered they were found to have retained lucid ancestral memories of the loss of their original homeland during a horrendous watery cataclysm.
